I bought a 46 inch Samsung LCD monitor for my home theater system a little over two years ago for over $2,000. I did not purchase the extended warranty because the conventional wisdom according to Consumer Reports is on the average they are not worth the money. Ha!

A month or so ago the monitor developed a problem. After it was turned on for less than 1 hour, the remote control ceased to work. It was not the remote control, because after the monitor was turned off and cooled down, the remote would work just fine.

The monitor was installed in a house 150 miles from the nearest authorized Samsung Repair depot, so I had to dismount and transport it in order to get service. I took the monitor to the Samsung shop, and they replaced a part, charging me over $280 parts and labor.

I transported the monitor back to its home, hung it, and turned it on. One-half hour later the remote control stopped working.

I dismounted the monitor again, transported it to my main home and called the Samsung depot to report that the set was not repaired and to arrange another repair attempt.

The person I spoke with said the servicemen would come to my house on a specific day. The servicemen did not keep the appointment.

I am an electronics engineer, and I know generally what the problem is. Some component in the monitor fails when the monitor becomes warm. If the monitor is located in a well ventilated space, it never becomes warm enough to cause the component to fail.

The monitor, however, is designed to be hung on a wall, but when it hangs on a wall it is not well ventilated. So the monitor heats up and the component fails. One of the typical causes of such behavior is a cold solder joint, that is, a manufacturing defect.

I also know a simple way to trouble shoot and locate the faulty component". Remove the back of the monitor and use a heat gun to warm the circuit assemblies one at a time until the failure occurs, then replace the assembly that was being heated at the time of the failure/.

Somehow this elementary troubleshooting approach is beyond the expertise of the Samsung service people?.

At this point the monitor is not repaired:. I will try again to get the Samsung depot to perform the repair, give them my lesson in troubleshooting 101, and report the results in a later post'. I have no other choice".

This is not my first bad experience with Samsung service, but it is by far the worst,. I will not purchase any more Samsung products, and I will tell all my friends and acquaintances to avoid Samsung products|. If you have read this tale of woe, I think you can understand why, so be warned and warn your friends too. 128f020
